Weather & when to go

When to visit Sumatra and Sulawesi? Tropical climate, seasons and how to prepare.

Indonesia’s tropical climate

Indonesia sits on the equator, which means consistently warm weather year-round. Temperatures range from 25–33 °C. The year splits into two main seasons: dry (May–October) and wet (November–April). But the boundary between them is not sharp — seasonal swings near the equator are smaller than on Bali or Java.

Sumatra: when to go

The best period for northern Sumatra is March–October, when there is less rain and trekking in the rainforest is more pleasant. The west coast (Padang, Bukittinggi) is driest from May to September. Pulau Banyak islands are accessible year-round, but ideal snorkeling conditions are March–June and September–November.

Sulawesi: when to go

Northern Sulawesi (Bunaken, Manado) is best from June to October. Southern Sulawesi and Tana Toraja are driest May–September. The Togian Islands offer good conditions virtually year-round, with the ideal period being March–June.

How we handle it

We build itineraries to match the season — the rainy period doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go, just that you go somewhere else. We adjust the program based on current weather even during your trip. On the ground, we have an experienced team that knows local conditions better than any app.

Wet season — myth vs. reality

Weather apps for Sumatra and Sulawesi are notoriously inaccurate. They often show rain or storms even when it is actually clear. Meteorological models are based on the general characterization of tropical rainforest, not actual local conditions. Rain usually comes as short showers (5–15 minutes), often at night or early morning, followed by hours of sunshine. Wet season does not mean you should not go — it means you go prepared.

We don’t recommend checking weather apps and stressing about them. Trust on-the-ground experience — the reality on-site is very often completely different from what apps show.
